It is a fantastic voyage
So, 26 years ago, when I was designing games for the Atari 2600 (aka the VCS) at Sirius Software, we were told we could use any title we wanted from the 20th Centruy Fox library. (Fox was publishing the games.) As an SF fan, I snatched up Fantastic Voyage, and wrote what I felt was a fairly nice game at the time (given we had a total of 16,384 bytes of ROM and 128 bytes of RAM). It even had a little bit touch of humor. (The enzymes in the blood stream were shaped like keys, paying homage to what I learned in high school biology.) I really haven't thought about the game much in the last decade or so, but I was tickled to receive the following email this morning:
"How are you? I am currently trying to get the world record on your game, Fantastic Voyage for Atari VCS. The world record is 330,000 and I recently got 310,000. The game gets pretty hard around 280,000. I was wondering if you can give me any tips? Thanks!"
I found this especially cool, having recently watched KINGS OF KONG, and gotten a look at the world of high-score competitions. I surfed around a bit, and found there are lots of people still playing these ancient games. I'm not sure whether this should make me feel ancient or eternal. Either way, it's kind of cool.
