It is a fantastic voyage
So, 26 years ago, when I was designing games for the Atari 2600 (aka the VCS) at Sirius Software, we were told we could use any title we wanted from the 20th Centruy Fox library. (Fox was publishing the games.) As an SF fan, I snatched up Fantastic Voyage, and wrote what I felt was a fairly nice game at the time (given we had a total of 16,384 bytes of ROM and 128 bytes of RAM). It even had a little bit touch of humor. (The enzymes in the blood stream were shaped like keys, paying homage to what I learned in high school biology.) I really haven't thought about the game much in the last decade or so, but I was tickled to receive the following email this morning:

"How are you? I am currently trying to get the world record on your game, Fantastic Voyage for Atari VCS. The world record is 330,000 and I recently got 310,000. The game gets pretty hard around 280,000. I was wondering if you can give me any tips? Thanks!"

I found this especially cool, having recently watched KINGS OF KONG, and gotten a look at the world of high-score competitions. I surfed around a bit, and found there are lots of people still playing these ancient games. I'm not sure whether this should make me feel ancient or eternal. Either way, it's kind of cool.

Oh, I am an occasional retro gaming addict -- I'll get hooked on Joust or Mr. Do or even Ms. Pac Man for weeks at a time. I need to re-get Stella, the 2600 emulator. I had it on my last computer and discovered that Adventure was just as good a game as I remembered, and Megamania even better than that.

(I once played Megamania for something like six or seven hours straight, trying to get to a million points. I did it, too. I wonder if I could duplicate that today...? Somehow I think my wife would be a lot less amused by that goal than my parents were thirty years ago.)

Awesome score. I'm impressed.
Joust still rocks.

How very cool! "Kings of Kong" was an awesome movie. A year or two, I managed to hook up my old Atari 2600 and play all those old games I'd loved as a kid, and show them to my kids. Talk about robust hardware--it still worked after all those years. My brother and I used to spend hours playing "Adventure"--I think that's what it was called. With the yellow, green, and red dragons, and the bat that steals things.

Those games are still fun. I got a disk for the Playstation that has a ton of 2600 games onit.

So did you give him any tips?

I couldn;t think of anything. With that kind of score, I suspect he could give me tips.

Heh, cool. That's a pretty rad claim to fame.

I totally heart KING OF KONG, by the way. And the nice one (not the BBQ sauce/coward one, obviously) lives near here, too. I was so jazzed up by the movie that I considered trying to find him -- maybe I could actually SEE the game in his GARAGE. Whoa.

You should totally write a video game novel. Or a book that somehow reads like you're playing a video game -- could that work?

I did write a video game novel. Unfortunately, everyone who's seen it thinks it sucks.

By the way, you should know that there is some controversy surrounding Kings of Kong: http://ascii.textfiles.com/archives/000574.html

Dude, I was in LOVE with Adventure on my Atari 2600! If you helped design Adventure, your coolness factor will automatically increase by several notches. Please write back to confirm this increase.

Alas, I had nothing to do with Adventure. I guess I'll have to remain at my current coolness level.
