Getting all blogged down

I'm pretty sure that, for many writers, daily blogging is a counterproductive activity. In a way, it functions like a book-store signing. If you're big-time famous, you'll get lots of traffic. If you're totally unknown, you'll benefit from what little traffic you get. But if you're in the middle, like most of us, I don't think it brings in many new readers or does all that much to promote a book. In many cases, I think it can actually lose readers. When you take a position on a polarizing subject such as politics, gay rights, or creamy vs. crunchy peanut butter, for example, you are going to lose some readers from the side you don't support. (Who knew neo-cons loved crunchy peanut butter so much?) The exception to this is when you post something that has viral appeal. A great trailer or a killer essay might get attention. But even then, I'm not sure it translates into increased book sales or even return blog readers. I'm pretty sure it is much better to have a blogger with tons of readers mention your book.

None of this means I'm thinking about giving up blogging. I like the community apsect of it. (That would mean you, my faithful readers.) And I like the idea that once in a while a post does turn, if not viral, at least somewhat bacterial. But I'm giving myself the freedom to not view any of this as a promotional tool. Which makes it all the more fun. (And which doesn't preclude me from talking about my books. I'll still scream good news from the rafters and tout the heck out of upcoming launches. But it shifts the exercise from the business side to the hobby side.) So, let the games begin.
